Faculty and staff honor roll 2022-2023

We're proud to highlight the self-reported accomplishments in alpha-order from SAU faculty and teaching staff throughout the 2022-2023 school year. This page also recognizes the contributions of this year's retirees and honors faculty and staff promotions.

Kyle Bennett, PhD (Social Work) published the following two articles in June 2022:

Matthew J. M. Coomber, PhD (Theology) was invited to be a guest speaker at a 2022 summer symposium at the Martin-Luther-University-Halle-Wittenberg in Wittenberg, Germany titled "Is It Good to be Rich? Answers from Antiquity and the Bible." The title of his paper, which is yet to be published and turned into a book, was "One Person's Gain Is Another's Loss: Prophetic Attitudes Towards Wealth in the Pre-Exilic Era". He presented "Attitudes toward Wealth in Hebrew Prophecy" and "Attempting Justice: Norman Gottwald's Hermeneutic on Social Class and Choosing to Go Public" at the 2022 Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado. 

Dr. Coomber also contributed to the following publications throughout the school year:

Ann Garton, DNP, FPCC, RN, CNE (Nursing and Institute for Person Centered Care) was chosen as SAU's 2022 Winter Commencement Keynote Speaker as well as selected as a peer reviewer for the 2023 American Nurses Credentialing Center National Magnet Conference and Tropical Medicine & International Health. She was honored this Spring with the 2023 SAU DEI Impact Award. 

Since January, she has presented on the following:

Philip Goldfarb Styrt, PhD (English) earned third place in the 2023 Iron Pen Writing Contest for Non-Fiction through the Midwest Writing Center. He also led a presentation titled "Rome Out of Time: Shakespear, Jonson, and Empire" at the Shakespeare Association of America in Minneapolis, MN and published the following:

  • Shakespeare in the Present: Political Lessons under Biden (Routledge Focus on Literature, Routledge Press). . 
  • “Stochastic Terrorism, January 6, and Medieval Monarchy,” a humanities article in The Sundial, Arizona Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
  • “Ipsos Custodes”, a short story in the Eastern Iowa Review.

Elisa Green, CCC-SLP (Speech-Language Pathology) was awarded the  for the state of Iowa through the American Speech Language and Hearing Association. She also co-led a presentation titled "Perspectives on Clinical Supervision from Research, Experience & Recent Supervisees" for an educational event with the Iowa Speech Language and Hearing Association. 

Ella Johnson, PhD (Theology) published  and an article titled “Defining Human Life Backwards: The Theology of Life in Death in Gertrude of Helfta’s Spiritual Exercises” in Cistercian Studies Quarterly in the Catholic Messenger. 

She also organized a conference panel and presented a paper with the Hagiography Society at the 58th International Congress for Medieval Studies, presented 3 times in collaboration with the Diocese of Davenport Eucharistic Revival Committee, and participated in a workshop for blog writers with the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning in Theology and Religion.

Emily Kingery, PhD (English) published  (Finishing Line Press, 2023) and was a featured reader at the Davenport Public Library and SPECTRA Poetry Series at Rozz-Tox in Rock Island, IL. She earned the following recognitions and awards:

  • Finalist, Pablo Neruda Prize in Poetry for "Snapdragons" and other poems
  • Honorable Mention in Poetry Category, Midwest Writing Center Iron Pen Content

Andrew Lutz, PhD (Engineering and Physics) presented a paper titled "" at the 2022 American Society of Engineering Education Annual Conference in Minneapolis, MN in June 2022. 

Imtiaz Mazumder, PhD (Finance) attended the 2022 Annual Meeting of the Financial Management Association (FMA) as a member of the Program Committee and also served as a Chairperson and Discussant of an . 

Michele Petersen, PhD (Theology and Philosophy) presented the paper titled "Evictions and the Lack of Affordable Housing: Challenges and Hope" at the 1 in October 2022 and hosted a breakout session titled "Pope Francis and Paul Ricoeur in Dialogue: A Contemplative Pedagogy for Lifelong Formation" at the  conference in March 2023.

Beyond campus, Dr. Petersen released a paperback edition of her book,  (Rowman & Littlefield, Lexington Books, 2021) and published a newspaper article in The Catholic Messenger titled . 

Lisa Powell, PhD (Theology and Women and Gender Studies) authored the following two book chapters:

  •  in Karl Barth and Liberation Theology, eds. Paul Dafydd Jones and Kaitlyn Dugan (London: T&T Clark), 2023.
  •  in Routledge Companion to Christian Ethics, eds. Rebekah Miles and Stephen Long (London: Routledge), 2022.

Lindsay Schaefer (English) gave a presentation at the College English Association Conference in San Antonio in March titled "Shushing the Scholars: Finding Authorial Power in Freshman Composition through Ethnographic Writing".

Brittany Tullis, PhD (Spanish and LatinX Studies) served her final year on the leadership team of the Comics Studies Society as Immediate Past President during AY 22-23. In addition to helping shape the work of the board, she also helped organize the society's sixth annual conference at the University of North Texas in July. Brittany continues to serve on the Executive Board of the International Comic Arts Forum, as well. This year the majority of her efforts on that board were focused on fundraising for the spring forum held at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver.
